The 3 Step Dog Consent Test: How to Let Your Dog Say "Yes" or "No" to Petting

Ever reached out to pet a dog, maybe your own, maybe a friend's, and had it flinch, turn away, or just look done with you? Most owners chalk it up to "he's just not a cuddly dog today." But often, the dog was trying to tell you something, and we simply reached in before asking.

That's where the canine consent test comes in. It's a quick, three step way to check whether a dog actually wants attention right now, instead of assuming. It takes less than 10 seconds, and it works on your own dog, a friend's dog, or any dog you meet on a walk around the neighbourhood.

Here's how it works.

Step 1: Invite, Don't Reach

Instead of walking straight up and putting your hand out, do the opposite.

  • Open your arms or offer an open hand, low and relaxed
  • Keep a little distance, don't lean in
  • Let the dog choose to come to you

If the dog trots over on its own, ears loose and tail wagging, that's an invitation accepted. If it hangs back, looks away, or stays put, that's your answer too, and it's just as valid. Not every dog wants to interact with every person, and that's okay.

Step 2: The Two Second Pet

Once the dog comes to you, don't launch into a full ear scratch session. Start small.

  • Gently pet the shoulder or upper back (skip the head and face for now, most dogs find this more intrusive than we think)
  • Pet for about two seconds, then stop and take your hand away

This pause is the whole point of the test. It gives the dog a clear moment to tell you what it wants next.

Step 3: Listen to What the Dog Says Next

After you stop, watch closely. Dogs are actually very clear communicators, we just aren't always taught how to read them.

Signs the dog wants more (green light):

  • Steps closer to you
  • Leans into your hand
  • Paws at you or nudges you
  • Relaxed, loose body language
  • Generally happy and calm

Signs the dog has had enough (red light):

  • Turns or moves away
  • Yawning or lip licking (a dog's subtle way of saying "I'm uncomfortable")
  • Stiff, tense body
  • Any other visible signs of stress

If you see the green lights, go ahead and keep petting. If you see the red lights, respect it and give the dog space, no hard feelings. You can always try again later.

Why This Matters More Than You'd Think

A lot of nips and bites, especially involving children, happen not because a dog is "aggressive," but because it felt cornered and had no other way to say no. Teaching kids (and honestly, adults too) to invite rather than reach, and to notice a stiff body or a turned head, prevents a huge number of these incidents before they happen.

It's also just good manners. Dogs can't opt out of a conversation the way people can, the least we can do is ask.

Making It a Habit at Home

The consent test isn't just for meeting new dogs, it's worth using with your own dog too, especially:

  • When your dog is resting or in its safe space (crate, bed, corner)
  • Around mealtimes or with a treat your dog really loves nearby
  • When kids in the house want to interact with the family dog
  • With senior dogs, who may have less patience or physical discomfort from joint pain

A calm dog who feels genuinely comfortable around people is often a dog whose "no" has been respected consistently, not one who's simply been handled a lot. If you're working on building that trust, calm, low pressure moments matter: a favourite treat offered gently during Step 2, for instance, can help a nervous dog associate gentle handling with something good, rather than something to brace for.

The Takeaway

Next time you meet a dog, yours or someone else's, try the three steps: invite, don't reach; pet for two seconds; then stop and listen. It's a small habit that makes every interaction safer and more respectful, for the dog and for you.
